Municipal Bookkeeper

Job Summary:

The Municipal Bookkeeper is responsible for performing a variety of financial and accounting duties to support the fiscal operations of the municipality. This position ensures accurate record-keeping, reporting, and compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. The bookkeeper works closely with other departments to manage budgets, process payments, and maintain the municipality's financial integrity.  The Bookkeeper works directly for the Town Supervisor.  

Duties and Responsibilities:

-Maintain general ledger and chart of accounts for the municipality
-Process accounts payable and receivable in a timely and accurate manner
-Reconcile bank statements and prepare monthly financial reports
-Assist in budget preparation, monitoring, and year-end reporting
-Process payroll and related tax filings
-Maintain records of municipal revenues, including taxes, permits, utility billing, and service fees
-Prepare financial statements and support documentation for audits
-Ensure compliance with relevant financial regulations and internal controls
-Respond to internal and external inquiries related to financial transactions
-Assist with grant reporting and tracking
-Support the annual audit process by compiling necessary reports and documentation
-Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor

Education:

-Associate's degree in accounting, Finance, or related field required; bachelor's degree preferred
-Minimum of 2–3 years of bookkeeping or accounting experience, preferably in a municipality or government setting

Necessary  Skills:

-Solid understanding of accounting principles and government fund accounting
-Strong attention to detail and accuracy
-Experience in payroll processing
-Excellent organizational and time management skills
-Experience with Williamson Law Books (Accounting and Payroll)
-Proficient in Microsoft Office, especially Excel
-Ability to work independently and as part of a team
-Strong written and verbal communication skills|
-Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information
